Actors Theatre
Actors Theatre was formed in 1986 by a group of Phoenix-based actors, directors and teachers who wished to see their home community become a place where excellent theatre could flourish and where professional theatre artists could live and work. Its original bylaws described a theatre company whose main ambition was to perform plays which would be emotionally stirring, intellectually significant and joyfully entertaining - dealing with subjects relevant to the modern world and peopled with characters whose goals and ambitions were both recognizable and relevant to their audience.
Actors Theatre presents passionate, thought-provoking theatre designed to add to the social dialogue of the community.
Our mission is to create professional theatre with a social conscience in an urban setting. The ideas and themes embedded in the work we produce are the framework for civic dialogue within our community. We have built a reputation as the company that takes the most risks and consistently delivers thought-provoking theatre; ensuring an ongoing connection between the plays and the people who attend our performances. Over the past 23 years the company has experienced tremendous growth and critical recognition, becoming one of Arizona's preeminent professional theatre companies. Actors Theatre performs exclusively at the Herberger Theater Center in downtown Phoenix. In 2000, the Arizona Theatre Alliance awarded Actors Theatre, the Producing Theatre Company of the Year, and in 2002, Business Volunteers for the Arts named Actors Theatre the Arts Organization of the Year.-

This gem from Actors Theatre is an incredibly well written, provocative, disturbing, sad, beautiful, hilarious piece of work. It is brilliantly directed and the show's cast defines great acting. It's the kind of work that warns "it's not for everyone", but it should be. This is exactly the kind of work that needs more visibility and support. It's the kind of work that separates AT from the other pro houses, and it is exactly the kind of work they do best! Collapse

We saw the Friday night 26th performance - Outstanding! Dwayne Hartford gave an amazing performance. It seems that our Arizona audiences rarely show great enthusiasm at the end of most performances -- even terrific ones like this production of Thom Pain. We were very impressed by this well done, thought provoking play. Collapse

There is absolutely nothing bad I can say about this. Worth every dime. Thank you for a superb perfomance. The carols at the end were wonderful.

“The Goat or, Who is Sylvia?” written by renowned American playwright Edward Albee and produced by actorstheatre at the Herberger Theater Center is not for the faint of heart. Playgoers who found “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” jarring and unsettling had better gird their loins for “The Goat.” This play doesn’t push the envelope. It slices, dices and decimates it. Which is to say it is one of the edgiest, best and most compelling plays to grace Valley stages since actorstheatre’s Producing Artistic Director Matthew Wiener gave us “Angels in America” in its entirety. Albee’s script, which explores the outer edges of societal boundaries and what happens when those boundaries are crossed, is explosive. His use of humor while exploring the darkest of subjects saves the audience from total despair and exhaustion. The writing is brilliant, Albee at his septuagenarian best. Marshall W. Mason’s direction is superb, as is the acting by Steven Akley, Harold Dixon, Karen Gregan and Randy Noojin. The show runs through May 14. Tickets are available through the Herberger Box Office, 602-252-8497. Collapse

Notwithstanding recent reviews, this production is not really about public housing, social classism, or the interplay between architecture and politics. All that "stuff" could just as easily have been about saving marine mammals or conserving redwood forests. Rather, this is a splendid play about a very curious interdependence, if not co-dependence, between two very quirky couples. In Act 1, the early scenes slowly, if not painfully, establish the plot, while the very latter scenes finally begin to arouse audience tension and anticipation. But despite A+ acting, the promise of Act 2 somehow does not quite fully rise to expectations, althugh it certainly maintains the level of angst developed at the end of Act 1. So, a 3.5 (B+) play combined with a 4.5 (A+) presentation (acting, directing, set, etc.) = an overall 4 stars (A), and well worth attending. Collapse
