The Deer Valley Rock Art Center, a museum and archaeological site located in northwest Phoenix, is pleased to invite you to our upcoming lecture. Richard Allen will be speaking on basalt rock and its significant meanings to ancient peoples and how they think about the land and skyscapes that surround them. The lecture will focus on basalt: why it is the preferred 'petroglyph' stone; how it has changed the landscape of the Valley; and why many Hohokam solar observatories are built using basalt. Richard Allen, a Certified Professional-Geologist and Accredited Gemologist, is a graduate of the University of Utah. He has conducted archaeological investigations of Fremont sites and ancestral Puebloan ruins in the Southwest and teaches geology and astronomy programs for several institutions. His company, Gemland, was formed in 1995 as a way of connecting people with rocks.
