From the very beginning, Cape Dorset art has been characterized by both tradition and innovation. As many established artists defined their favorite themes and refined their styles, other artists -- both older and younger -- began experimenting with new ideas, new techniques and a growing sense of self-as-artist. The Heard Museum North Scottsdale's newest exhibition, Cape Dorset Art: Tradition and Innovation gives an overview of almost six decades of art making in Cape Dorset, highlighting the work of both established artists and rising stars. Tradition and Innovation is comprised of 35 prints and 17 sculptures, including artwork never before publicly exhibited. Cape Dorset Art: Tradition and Innovation is the second changing exhibition at the new location of Heard Museum North Scottsdale. The exhibition draws from the Albrecht Collection of Arctic Art at the Heard Museum and focuses on the preeminent Inuit art community in Canada's Arctic, Cape Dorset (also know as Kingait). The art of this southern Baffin Island village became famous in the early 1950's; since that time, three generations of artists have created sculptures, drawings and annual collections of limited edition prints.
