Add Review/CommentMadcap antics and quirky characters make Rhys Bowen's newest mystery book, 'Her Royal Spyness,' a sure-fire hit. Bowen will talk about her latest heroine, Lady Victoria Georgiana Charlotte Eugenie, who is 34th in the line for the English throne. Set in London in 1930, Georgie had been educated to curtsey, host lavish fetes and marry well. When her brother cut off her pitiful allowance, Georgie left the family home in Scotland for London, determined to become a liberated woman. A job as a saleswoman at Harrods only lasted a few hours. She decided to open a maid service; of course, Georgie was the only domestic. She turned detective after her brother was accused of downing a man in the bathroom of his Belgrave London home. She must clear her brother and the family name. Other adventures of Georgie will follow soon. Born in Bath, England, of a Welsh/English family, Bowen was educated at London University. She became a station manager for the BBC in London. To escape the dreary London weather, she accepted a position with Australian Broadcasting in Sydney. While there, she met her future husband; they settled in the San Francisco area. While raising four children, she wrote children's books. Later she switched to writing for teenagers. She finally decided to write what she like to read - mysteries with a great feel for time and place. Her first mystery series, Constable Evans, is set in the Wales locale that she remembered from childhood. Later, she wrote a series about Molly Murphy, a brash, fearless Irish immigrant who struggles to survive in turn-of-the-century New York City. Bowen has been nominated for every major mystery award and won seven of them. 'Her Royal Spyness' will be available for purchase at the program.
