Mathis' shy charm and unpretentious lifestyle stand in stark contrast with his record-shattering career success. Toward the beginning of his career, it was not uncommon to see as many as four of his albums on the Billboard Top Albums Chart simultaneously. In 1958 Johnny's Greatest Hits was released and that began a 'Greatest Hits' tradition copied by every record company since then. Johnny's Greatest Hits went on to become one of the most popular albums of all time and spent an unprecedented 490 continuous weeks (almost 10 years) on the Billboard Top Album Chart, a record even noted by The Guinness Book of World Records.
