It’s back by popular demand – despite the weather! Once again you can trace the historic footsteps of the Tohono O’odham, or the Desert People, and take a rare excursion into the desert to pick the fruit of the saguaro. The expedition is being sponsored by the Desert Caballeros Western Museum and will be led by museum volunteer and desert historian Joe Stevens. Those on the tour will learn how the Tohono O’odham celebrated New Year’s in July. They’ll make a traditional saguaro picking stick; and they’ll turn their harvest into a delicious syrup they can take home for waffles, pancakes and killer margaritas! Throughout the expedition, Stevens will share the lore and rituals of the Tohono O’odham who used the fruit of the saguaro in its entirely. “From the fruit, they made syrup, and also wine,” says Stevens. “From the seeds, they extracted oil.” He’ll explain the myth of why saguaros only grow on a south-facing slope, and detail the yearly cycle of the Desert People including information about how the critical saguaro harvest signaled the end of the old year, and the start of the new. Important Information: Reservations are required for this event. This event will take place on Either Saturday, July 7, Or Saturday, July 14, depending on the date the fruit is ripe. The day-long event will depart from the Museum with participants either carpooling or using their own vehicles. Those who sign up will receive notice of the tour’s exact date and are asked to bring small jelly jars so they can take the fruits of their labor home. They should also come armed with sunscreen and a hat; and wear long pants and sturdy shoes.
