The Los Angeles Times called Diaz's work 'Broodingly personal with a compelling, esoteric edge.' Tucson based artist and musician Daniel Martin Diaz creates mystical, surreal, time worn paintings. Influences of devotional folk art, ritual, and irony converge with Catholic iconography to produce pleasantly captivating, yet dark images. Diaz's parents were born in Mexico and traditional imagery makes its way into many of his pieces. 'I am most influenced by the great amount of human suffering that has occurred throughout history and one's undying faith in the after life. Often times I am subconsciously influenced by world attitudes or stories and also by the people I am closest to. I prefer to keep an open mind and let the subject matter take on a life of its own,' says Diaz. His work is best discovered patiently, layer-by-layer, which is how Diaz creates the intense Old World tones in his pieces. Although he never attended art school, Diaz has developed a sophisticated and individualistic style; all of his paintings are rooted in detailed sketches. Made of oil on wood, graphite and linoleum, his work offers a modern twist on liturgical, Byzantine, Early Christian and Medieval art. Opening Reception: On September 14, Mesa Contemporary Arts will hold a free reception for the three new Fall exhibits from 7:00pm-10:00pm, heavy hors d'oeuvres, musical entertainment, and a cash bar will be offered.

I completely disagree with “Glass Seller’s” review, it’s totally off base. I too went to the Sat. evening performance and was only six rows back and did not notice any problems whatsoever with the mics. I have been to all of the major Broadway musicals and even believe this musical will some day be compared to the likes of “Phantom of the Opera.” This was the first ever performance of this musical; it stands to reason that it would not be perfect. I thought the music and the orchestra were absolutely awesome! There were a couple of songs and scenes that I didn’t care for, but over all it was fabulous. The performers were good, but not great. There were two exceptional performances by the character Robin and Lou. I think you’ll see this musical again, bigger and better than ever, probably in a larger theater market too. It was pathetic how few people showed up, however I suppose that is to be expected from a first time musical. Mr. Anderson, if you read this…kudos to you! Collapse

It's not for lack of talent that 'The Wager' disappoints. Its orchestration, vocals, and dancing are rich and well-exercised. However, even if you know the Bible story of Job, the play's dialog & lyrics are a glaringly trite and repetitive, detracting to already-flat characterizations. The show's commitment to putting the story of Job in a modern-day corporate setting is only partial and creates frustration for the audience. For example, without knowing that "J" and "Lou" are something more than ordinary, human businessmen, the audience does not understand their power and perspective. Adding distraction throughout the Sat. night performance was that microphones weren’t being turned on until an actor was 5 words into a phrase. I respect Mr. Anderson's effort to bring a story to the musical stage - especially as a local artist. His musical talent is very obvious, but I hope his future musical dramas involve as much focus on words and acting as it does orchestration. Collapse

I was fortunate enough to have been invited to attend a rehearsal and I have to say, I was very impressed! From the music, the 30+ piece orchestra to the acting, this is a must see. They even lowered the ticket prices as I got a partial refund on the tickets I already purchased, so the prices are now very reasonable, especially for a musical of this scale. Collapse

Fully Committed is the restaging of a show that originally ran at the Herberger in 2002 and was directed by David Ira Goldstein and is restaged by Glenn Bruner. It returns to the valley by popular demand. If you missed it then, don't miss it now! Bob Sorenson, got a standing ovation for his one man portrayal of over 20 characters, and Sam the restaurant reservationist who juggles phone calls of demanding customers all wanting a coveted table at this high demand restaurant in NYC. Sam is a reservationist on the side. His first love is acting, and that career is strugling. He is also caught between his drug-addicted, egomanical chef who won't decide if they will be open on Christmas, and his recently widowed father who wants him to come home to South Bend for Christmas. Over twenty hilarious characters call and Bob plays them all. Characters like Dr. Ruth, Naomi Campbell, who complains about the lighting and a mafia VIP who is bribing Sam for a table. Fully Committed is hilarious Collapse
