An international hit makes its Arizona premiere when multi-talented Hershey Felder kicks off our season with his widely-acclaimed musical play. Evoking Gershwin's famous radio broadcasts of the 1930s, George Gershwin Alone explores the life, talent and spirit of the legendary composer - from his early days as an audacious Tin Pan Alley novice, to his breakthrough success with Rhapsody in Blue, to fame and fortune as a songwriter during the glamorous era of the 1930s Broadway and Hollywood, and finally to the deeply felt social consciousness if masterpieces like Porgy and Bess. A Steinway Concert Artist, actor and playwright, Hershey Felder is the only individual to whom the Gershwin heirs have granted permission to create the role of George Gershwin on stage. Important Information: There will be an American Sign Language performance of George Gershwin Alone on October 21 at 4:00pm.

I saw the show in Tucson the second night it was playing. As a Gershwin fan with a special feeling for Rhapsody in Blue I expected to enjoy it. However I was surprised to find myself saying "it is the best two hours entertainment I have seen in many years." Felder "was" Gershwin. His patter and his renditions of old Gershin tunes was outstanding and only exceeded by the most exciting piano rendition of the Rhapsody that I have ever experienced. I expect to be taking a Phoenix grandson (HS senior) who is a pianist and has an interest in composition to see a Phoenix performance. I'm looking forward to seeing it for a second time. Collapse
