The Grand Canyon is one of the natural wonders of the world. From its first discovery the canyon has awed viewers and fueled the imaginations of artists. The majesty of the canyon challenges the ability of artists to capture it. Grand Canyon Grandeur presents 51 images by 20 of the most famous artists ever to paint the canyon. Some, like E. Irving Couse and Carl Oscar Borg, placed Native Americans at the canyon. Others recorded early western exploration of the canyon area, like H. B. Mollhausen, or establishment of the early American presence there, like Louis Akin. Many simply tried to interpret the grandeur of the canyon, such as Thomas Moran, Gunnar Widforss, William Robinson Leigh, Sheldon Parsons, George Gardner Symons, Frederick Williams and Edgar Payne. Others were among the finest printmakers ever to work in America: Gustave Baumann, Hiroshi Yoshida and Howard Cook. Some of the artists, instead of exploring the massive splendor of the canyon, focused upon the river, the canyon rim, or adjacent areas, such as Ferdinand Burgdorff, Lyman Byxbe, Albert Groll or George Elbert Burr. All works in the exhibition date from the mid-1930s or before. 'The variety of artists, range of images and diversity of media all contribute to a smashing exhibition,' states museum director Tom Wilson, 'Grand Canyon Grandeur has something for everyone.'
