OMG I was completely blown away by Greasepaint's production of RENT: School Edition! Those kids really knew how to tell that amazing story that the late great Jonathon Larson wrote. RENT is my all-time favorite musical but I am not being biased at all here. For an adult-themed show put on by a bunch of teenagers, I was completely mesmerized! As big of a musical that RENT truly is, those kids rose to the challenge and blew the audience's minds! I felt so privileged to have had the opportunity to see it given how far way I live from the theater. Seeing that show was well worth driving from Sun City to Scottsdale. To the entire cast and D. Scott Withers I say that you all are blessed with raw talent and may it shine for years to come! Keep up the brilliant work! =] Collapse

I was apprehensive of seeing this show (after seeing 2 touring productions and the Broadway production a few years back) - and I was ashamedly surprised at the talent of Greasepaint's cast of Rent. In a word - brilliant. Withers has smartly directed & cast this piece (gems in the cast are Roger, Mimi, & Angel). And Plado's onstage band pays great homage to Jonathan Larson's music to a tee. Don't walk - RUN to see these youngsters tackle the material of Rent - and they do it so well. You won't be sorry!! Collapse

(continued)...the only thing that bothered me was, when the show finally started, not even half the size of the house was filled. This, my friends, is a problem. Every single person in the valley's very large theater community needs to take a gander at this moving and touching show. If the message of this show is not delivered to as many people as possible whats the point of the message? Do not let yourself regret not seeing this show, cause in the end of october, if you haven't bought your ticket yet, you will, I promise you, definitely be beating yourself up. What makes this show different from any other production of Rent is it is done by kids Collapse

This show is the most groundbreaking achievement for youth theater in Scottsdale since I can remember. The subject matter is very controversial and some presume that a show as intense as this should not and cannot be done by the youth of our valley. They were wrong. D. Scott Withers captured the heart, spirit and message of this "role of the dice" show with his perfect casting and brilliant staging. Alan Plado's music direction and rockin' band also deserve much of the credit that needs to be given to this show. Beth Reynold's choreography is just the icing on the cake to this German chocolate of an break through (haha). The brand new sound equipment and sound design, which make "easy listening" sound overworked, add a brand new level to the support and prosperity of the new Greasepaint. Michael Eddy, being the already known genius that he is, created a lighting design that reflected the attitude of this edgy production. Again every cast member is perfect but the only thing... The show Mulan Jr. at Stagebrush Theatre was one of the best performances I have yet to see with my child, in the Valley. The acting was great but the music blew me away.On the way home my child had all the words to "I'll Make A Man Out of You" stuck in his head. The older male actors, such as the boy who played Qian-Po really kept me laughing. A great comedy to keep the whole family laughing. Collapse

I will start with the young actors in the production of Mulan Jr. The ancestors who are the narrators of the tale all do a wonderful job with exspressive facial expressions. Grandma fa played by young Jessica was the true star of the show who had a great feel for the character. Mulan played by Sierra has a wonderful voice but I think she was miscast as the role of Mulan, she didn't remind me at all of the disney's character, which she should. Mushu was played by Jaylia who was great at the role she moved just like a dragon with a wonderful belt! The Matchmaker played by Danielle interpretation of the role was different from the disney movie but still great!Captain Shang was played by Yichao who had a good stage presence. Director did a good job bringing the disney movie to life. The Costumes and Lighting were dissapointing. The sets were simple and sweet. Overall I was impressed. Thank you to Phoenix Theatre!
