Cats and humans share a special relationship. In ancient Egypt, felines were worshipped as gods-and, according to an anonymous pundit, cats have never forgotten it! During the Medieval period in Europe, cats fell out of favor, but, by the Renaissance, they had regained their position as pets and respected mouse hunters. By the 19th century when specific breeds began to be developed, cats had become welcome human companions-ridding barns of rats and enjoying a comfortable lap. In celebration of the unique association between our species, the Arizona Museum for Youth offers PurrrFection: Cats in Art. This exhibition is full of felines--wild and domesticated--depicted in oil on canvas, ceramics, print and many other mediums by twenty-five artists. Young visitors are able to participate in art-based activities that will enhance the appreciation and understanding of our feline artwork.
