Searching for Mesa: Finding Ourselves in our History, is a cultural history of the Mesa region covering more than 2,000 years. The exhibit begins with an overview of the ancient Hohokam civilization, which occupied the central Arizona region from approximately AD 1 through the middle of the 15th century. Four hundred years after the Hohokam’s cultural disappearance, the story shifts to the earliest settlements of the Mesa region along the Salt River by Mormon pioneers in 1877, followed soon after by the development of a community atop the geographical mesa from which the city takes its name. Later chapters in Mesa’s history explored by the exhibit will include the development of nearby Roosevelt Dam, providing an economic boon to the fledgling community; the advent of Arizona statehood, the Great Depression and World Wars I and II; and the eventual boom of post-war tourism and explosive population growth that resulted in Mesa’s attaining the rank of 40th largest city in the United States. The exhibit will feature more than 200 historic photographs and hundreds of artifacts, as well as recorded oral histories from past Mesa residents and a variety of hands-on activities for children.
