In this retelling of the biblical story Susannah and the Elders, Carlisle Floyd has set the drama in a valley of the Appalachian mountains. This tale of the innocent Susannah, who is falsely accused of wickedness by the town’s “pious” Elders, weaves melodies, folk ballads, hymns and even square dance motifs to create a truly American opera. Originally built by Hawaii Opera Theatre from designs by Peter Dean Beck, this production of Susannah captures the folk flavor that its music so beautifully expresses. Joel Revzen will conduct the orchestra of 40 in this Arizona Opera premiere. Soprano Diane Alexander (Washington National Opera) sings the title role and Robert Breault (New York City Opera) sings the role of Sam Polk. Notes: Susannah will be sung in English with English surtitles. Credits: Music and libretto by Carlisle Floyd.
