Written in 1771, Gretry’s enchanting and whimsical opera was said to have been one of Mozart’s favorite pieces. In this delightful new co-production with Opera Theatre of St. Louis, human topiaries and feathered creatures frolic in a storybook garden as the sweet and virtuous Beauty saves her Beast. Critics at its U.S. premiere last year raved, 'It's an evening of musical delights with a familiar story, fast-moving, with a satisfying moral and devoid of Disney kitschiness. It's a pleasure for all ages and levels of operatic sophistication.” Stage director Renaud Doucet and set and costume designer Andre Barbe have created an imaginative world that will delight children and adults alike. Early music specialist Jeannette Sorrell conducts in her Arizona Opera debut. Soprano Monica Yunus (Metropolitan Opera) will sing Zémire, tenor John McVeigh (Houston Grand Opera) will sing Azor and baritone Hugh Russell (Boston Lyric Opera) will sing Sander. Notes: Beauty and the Beast will be sung in English with English surtitles. Credits: Score by André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry. Libretto by Jean-Françoise Marmentel after the story La Belle et la Bête by Jeanne-Maria Leprince de Beaumont and the play Amour pour Amour by P.C. Nivelle de la Chausée.
