The Mesa Contemporary Arts is proud to announce its summer exhibition, Mass Consumption. Mass Consumption is a national juried exhibition that comments on people, events, movies, TV, radio, Internet, consumerism, politics and anything that is relevant in today's popular culture. This exhibition features 63 artworks by 53 artists from 20 states and includes both traditional and nontraditional media. The exhibition features works by Chris Mars, as well as local artists Mike Maas and Roy Wasson Valle. Popular culture refers to anything that is acceptable or has widespread appeal in a society. In America, popular culture is defined through film, TV, fashion, radio, the Internet, music, religion, consumer products, politics and of course, art. Art always reflects the society producing it and often comments on the ideologies and trends that develop. In the 1960s, Andy Warhol epitomized the Pop Art movement, where the line between popular culture and art merged. Referred to as the 'Father of Pop Art,' Warhol challenged traditional notions about art and provided his own take on social acceptability, blatantly using mass production, famous people and consumer brands in his art. The exhibition demonstrates the wide appeal of popular culture and its continuing impact on contemporary art and society.
