The Phoenix Museum of History presents students' work from El Espejo After School, a year-long artist residency at Paul Laurence Dunbar Elementary. Students worked with local artist Joe Shetler to create the four-panel mural depicting Mexican history in Phoenix. Using historic photos in the museum's current exhibit El Espejo Mexico Americano/The Mexican American Mirror, Shetler and Dunbar students painted famous Mexican Phoenicians, such as Trinidad Escalante Swilling and Silvestre Herrera, as well as the canals and railroads that Mexicans in early Phoenix helped to build. One student, Daniel Guillen Lopez remarked, 'I helped to paint the cactus which shows the setting of Phoenix along with the mountains and the desert.' Another student Jasmine Parker said 'I helped to paint the I.S. Espinoza Grocery Store which represents the Mexican American businesses in Phoenix.' Beginning in August, the mural will be on permanent display in the halls of Dunbar Elementary School. This work was generously supported by the Phoenix Museum of History, the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant, the City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, the Arizona Department of Education, and the Phoenix Elementary School District #1.
