When Sam Basset met Bettina Grossman at the Chelsea Hotel, the 'enlightened, but paralyzed' artist, collector and recluse was 'suffocating in her own greatness.' 'I saw right away how brilliant she was, even though she had basically retracted into solitude for 30 years.' So Bassett set about organizing her vast body of work and made a documentary about her. In the process, he helped her emerge from the depths of isolation, while she mentored him and helped elevate his work. The film profiles the cross-generational relationship between an old-guard, artistic recluse with a roller-coaster life, and her fair-haired knight, a lacrosse star from New Jersey. Bassett shows Grossman, once called 'the most beautiful woman to ever live', slowly emerging from decades of depression and isolation. 'Inside those boxes,' says Bassett, 'was her family, her children, her husband, her grandchildren, even her beauty.' That the lives of these two artists would intersect in the Chelsea Hotel is testament to the quirky character of the Manhattan residence which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year.
