Sizzlin' Summer Saturdays offers a great opportunity for families to beat the summer heat and enjoy a day of music and dance performances, artist demonstrations, an extravaganza of hands-on craft activities, the museum's three interactive galleries, sweet treats and goody bags. Performances offered twice daily at 11:00am and 1:30pm vary on each weekend and will include intertribal dances like hoop dancing as well as other cultural traditions. This month's Sizzlin' Summer Saturdays is scheduled as follows: July 5 - Watch It Grow! Hopi Butterflies & Corn Kids can get hands-on and make a butterfly, decorate their own wooden ear of corn, make a candy corn critter and form a finger-painted corncob. Young girls and boys who make up the Hopi Dance Group will perform several Hopi social dances. Plus, meet Jeanette Chimerica, a Hopi basketweaver, who will show how she makes both coil baskets and plaques using bright colors and traditional and contemporary designs. Visitors can see the film Hopi: Corn is Life (20 minutes) and grind corn in the museum's South Courtyard. Plus, author Jan Cleere will talk about and sign her newest book, Amazing Girls of Arizona True Stories of Young Pioneers, a collection of incredible tales about young girls who experienced bold adventures and survived incredible challenges in early Arizona. July 12 - Bejeweled! American Indian Jewelry After checking out the exhibit Young Jewelers: Forging a Future, kids can make a beaded bracelet out of pony beads, then create a beaded necklace with a faux bone petroglyph pendant or a wooden lizard pendant. Visitors can try their hands at a pump drill, used for centuries to drill holes in stone or shell, and see how Navajo jeweler Marvin Slim hammers and forms his distinctive sterling silver jewelry. Aztec storyteller Michael Heralda will use ballads, narratives and handmade clay flutes, gourd water drums, shakers and rasps to share stories handed down through families, generation after generation. Plus, meet Crafty Chica Kathy Cano-Murillo, who will be signing her many books including The Crafty Diva's Lifestyle Makeover and The Crafty Diva's D.I.Y. Stylebook. July 19 - Join the Herd! Sheep in Navajo Life Get hands-on while creating your own soft sheep using a variety of materials and techniques. Plus, help the mother sheep find her kid and try your hand at carding wool. Then see how Navajo weaver Michael Ornelas uses sheep's wool to spin yarn and weave it into magnificent textiles. Father and son dancers Lane and Tyrese Jensen, Navajo, will thrill audiences with a variety of Pow wow dances including fancy dancing and hoop dancing. Navajo author Monty Roessel will sign his books Kinaalda: A Navajo Girl Grows Up and Songs from the Loom: A Navajo Girl Learns to Weave. July 26 - By the Sea! Northwest Coast and Inuit Art Sea creatures from the Northwest Coast and Canada come to life as kids explore the museum's Every Picture Tells a Story and Life in a Cold Place galleries, featuring Inuit prints and sculpture. Then, kids can join the artistic fun by weaving their own fish bookmark, creating an origami whale, painting a wooden fish or completing two fish mazes. Mandan sculptor Kathy 'Elk Woman' Whitman will demonstrate how she sculpts animals out of stone and recycled objects. From the Great White North to the South America, the band Nosotros performs lively, festive Latin rhythms inspired by the Great Andean Mountains and using traditional instruments, which kids can try before and after the shows. Author Beverly Bear will sign her new book Strawberry Finds a Home.
