Koko! The Island Adventures of Miss Koko Neufchatel
April 8-April 24, 2005
Miss Koko Neufchatel invites you to spend an evening of story and song from her romantic South Seas island getaway. As she relates the harrowing true-to-life tale of her often tragic, yet ultimately triumphant, fate as a celebrated drag diva, she is cast away on a deserted island by the cruel whims of fate. You will thrill at how she learned to survive as a jungle native, while maintaining her rigorous standards of glamour, poise, and gender illusion. You will gasp as she battles against the uncivil forces of nature--tropical typhoons, masturbating monkeys, and one very severe Nordic missionary nemesis named Miss Crabgrass. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll snap your civilized worries goodbye. A fierce and fabulous cross between Castaway and The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert, Koko! The Island Adventures Of Miss Koko Neufchatel was conceived and written by local playwright David Maxey and makes its world premiere under the direction of Scott Pierce. Special opportunities: The World Premiere of Koko! The Island Adventures of Miss Koko Neufchatel is an exciting opportunity for you, the community, to help decide who should represent this original work in California. That's right, Koko will be played by three different actors, all of whom have a chance to reprise their role in Los Angeles, California! Not only is this great for the actor but great for Arizona. You have the option to purchase tickets for a single night's performance and watch one of the three actors portraying this versatile character. Or you can purchase a three performance pass allowing you to not only see all three actors portray Miss Koko but also get to be part of the exciting final night on April 29th when you, our community, and @pro decide who gets to go on to Los Angeles.

Once in a while as an audience member, you are treated to a performance that both exceeds any expectations you may have had, and moving you to new emotional heights along the way. Artists'Theatre Project's production of A NEW BRAIN at Soul Invictus did just that. Arguably, the most introductory friendly of the 4 produce-able pieces by William Finn, the show has something for everybody, from catchy pop ballads to clever sondheim-esque patter songs, the cast is exceptional. That being said, admittedly, I am sucker for women belters, and Kimberlee Blazes through William Finn's score with razor sharp precision hitting notes in the stratosphere while making it seem as effortless as cutting through butter with a hot knife. RUN do not WALK to see A NEW BRAIN at @pro!!! Collapse

I was extremely disappointed. The script itself was smart and funny however I don’t think the actors were skilled enough to pull of such unique and witty material. But perhaps it was just the direction they were given. One of the actors was actually reading his lines off of the back of a prop during one of his monologues. Another of the actresses performed all of her characters the same and yelled lines at inappropriate times killing the joke she was telling. She also broke character and starting laughing on stage every time the audience would react to the jokes. Unfortunately the directors costume choice for her was very unflattering on what I’m sure is normally a very attractive woman. The highlight of the evening was the girl who did the monologue about pooping! The only time I laughed was when she was on stage. I think she was the only one who embodied the spirit of the show. I am going to pass this off as a fluke for a theater company that normally produces wonderful shows. Collapse

At first I was a little worried being one of very few audience members, but I figured it was only $15 so what did I have to lose? However, I can honestly say that from the very first note of the show I was very impressed. The cast is made up four amazing performers that more than fill the space with sound with out the aide of mics. I have listened to Songs For A New World for years, but not until I actually saw it performed did I really appreciate the stories told of the songs. While the first Act is definitely the more upbeat of the two Acts, my favorite moments took place in Act Two; Aimee Lucas's "Christmas Lullably", Damon Bolling & Ms. Lucas's "I'll Give All For You" and Mandy Roses's "Flagmaker" each brought a tear to my eye. While this production may have an occasional flaw, it's was an overall great show. It is a shame there was not many there to see it. I hope this talented cast gets the audience they deserve. Collapse

I saw the preview for this show last night and it was wonderful! It touched on controversial issues such as abortion and the war. The cast was amazing! There were moments that were fun and made you want to dance to the music, and then there were moments that were moving and sincere and brought a tear to my eye. This is a show you don't want to miss!
