Dr. Brian Dippie will be sharing his thoughts on the current state of western art in a talk entitled “The Turbulent Waters of Western Art.” At the same time, he is sure to reach back into the past to share how some of our best-known western artists have played a key role in perpetuating the myths of the West. Remington, for example, says Dippie, celebrated the transition of the West; how the West was tamed and won. Russell, on the other hand, had a very different focus. The artist, according to Dippie, mourned the loss of the carefree and open West and the loss of the traditional cultures of the American Indian. Unlike Remington, who was an easterner, Russell had grown up in Montana where he was familiar with the cowboy way of life and wanted to perpetuate the romantic side of the West rather than its conquest. A professor of history at the University of Victoria, BC, where he has taught since 1970, Dr. Dippie is a specialist in the art and popular culture of the American West. He is the author of Custer’s Last Stand: Anatomy of an American Myth; Remington and Russell: The Sid Richardson Collection; Catlin and His Contemporaries: The Politics of Patronage; West-Fever; Charlie Russell Roundup: Essays on America’s Favorite Cowboy Artist; George Catlin and His Indian Gallery; and co-author of Remington Schuyler’s West: Artistic Visions of Cowboys and Indians.
