Something Wonderful: The King and I Brings a Local Actor to the Stage for the 29th Time. Collaboration is the name of the game in Scottsdale. Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I, is a joint production of Greasepaint Scottsdale Youtheatre and the Scottsdale Community Players. With direction and musical direction by Scott Storr and choreography by Marlina Kessler, this truly unique musical love story that has caused its audiences to whistle a happy tune remains a heartfelt favorite of American theatergoers of all ages. It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the king to serve as tutor to his many children and wives. The king is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West and he seeks Anna's assistance in changing his image, if not his ways. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the king spend time getting to know each other and growing to understand and, eventually, respect one another. The Scottsdale production introduces Katherine Martin of Phoenix in the role of Anna, Amanda Glenn in the role of Tuptim, while LunTha is being played by Mark Baysa. SCP is very happy to reintroduce Phoenix actor Ron Jennings as the cantankerous King of Siam. The longevity of Jennings' performance history mirrors that of Yul Brynner himself; Jennings has previously played the King in this classic musical a very impressive 28 times.
